Canalwalk second phase urged for 2013

On July 11, 2012 the Massachusetts Department of Transportation held a public hearing at the City Council Chambers to discuss the designs and projected timeline of Holyoke’s second phase Canalwalk. The hearing, which had roughly 40 audience members in attendance, featured a presentation of the project design by the City’s consultants, VHB Inc., and supportive comments from the public whom urged construction to start in 2013.

State and City officials are currently working on a project timeline that will meet those expectation for the over $4 million investment that will span Race Street between Dwight and Appleton Streets, and runs up Dwight and Appleton Street to connect with the 1st Phase. The Canalwalk will also include the conversion of a former rail bridge into a pedestrian walkway over the 2nd Level Canal.
