Local business owner María Ferrer has been appointed and confirmed as the newest member of the Holyoke Redevelopment Authority’s (HRA) board. María was recently confirmed by the City Council after being appointed by the Mayor in January of 2014. María will be taking the seat of former board member Jacqueline Watson, who served the HRA since its reestablishment in 2008 until November 1st, 2013. During that time, “Jackie” was an integral part of the HRA’s efforts to create the urban renewal plan and serving as its chair during 2013.
María first invested into downtown Holyoke over 10 years ago, purchasing her building on 396 High Street and renovating it for her business, M.D. Beauty Salon which she owns and operates. Since moving into downtown, María has also been active in planning activities and beautification projects for downtown Holyoke, and is a champion for making the downtown area a better place. Most recently, she coordinated a business-sponsored wreath program during the 2013 holiday season which was a resounding success, and for which she was recognized as the Holyoke “Civic Pride Award” Winner for November 2013.
