The Mountain Road Firing Range East (Eastern Range) is part of a several parcel, multi-acre site which has been contaminated with lead and other metals in soil, groundwater, sediment, and surface water. This site is located in one of the rural areas of the City of Holyoke.
Since 2002, the site has received approximately $500,000 in assessment and clean-up funds through the EPA and MassDEP, and upon the closing of the last clean-up grant received (11/2013), the environmental contractor determined that substantial risk reduction has been accomplished by removal of lead-contaminated surface soil. The City still needs to evaluate whether the remaining soil contamination poses a significant risk to human health for the planned future use of the site. A Stage II environmental risk characterization is needed to further evaluate ecological exposures due to soil and surface water at the site. Additionally; wetlands conservation and restoration work remains, and further environmental restoration may be needed given that the area is a recognized endangered species habitat.
