In August 2011, the City Council approved the bonding for $6 million for upgrades to two of the City’s largest parking decks located in the Center City. As the area continues to grow the decks will accommodate parking for nearby developments while retaining the dense, walkable infrastructure of the Center City.
The repairs were finished last year on the Ernest E. Proulx Parking Garage on Dwight Street. The renovation included concrete repairs to the precast floor and framing, replacement of all joint sealants, application of traffic bearing waterproofing membrane and floor sealer, replacement of stairtower doors, frames, and hardware, replacement of the power distribution and general and emergency lighting systems, new fire alarm system, replacement of the parking and revenue control systems, painting metal barrier guard railings, exterior trim, interior walls and traffic markings, cleaning and servicing of floor drain system, new signage and graphics.
For the Suffolk Street garage, $5.5 million of work is being done consisting of demolition and replacement of the concrete parking deck and perimeter wall, cleaning and repainting of the steel frame, installation of new LED lighting throughout the garage, underground storm water management system and a new parking control system. Demolition started in April on the Suffolk Street deck and was completed in mid-June. Forming for the new concrete slab is currently underway. Concrete pours will begin in mid-July and continue bi-weekly through September. The project is expected to be complete and the garage reopened in December. The General Contractor is W.J. Mountford Company of S. Windsor CT. When reopened, Executive Parking will mange the operation of the garage and parking rates will remain the same at $0.25/hour and monthly parking permits will be sold for $20/month. When finished, there will be 188 spaces on the lower level and 210 on the upper.
