Several streetscapes are being updated along Dwight, Appleton and Main street corridors in order to better connect major assets and neighborhoods in the Center City to each other, among them: Veteran’s Park, the Chestnut Park Apartments and Holyoke Transportation Center; the Lyman Terrace neighborhood; the Flats Neighborhood; the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center; the Canalwalk; and the upcoming Passenger Rail Platform, among other sites. This area is also the main pedestrian walking corridor to public transit, government services, the central business district and healthcare.
The Project consists of improvements to Dwight, Appleton and Main streets near Mosher. Additional improvements in the coming years will include Front and Heritage Streets which includes enhancements to the pedestrian environments such as increased street trees, sidewalk improvements, directional signage, traffic calming, and crosswalk upgrades to increase the safety of pedestrians living and working within the Downtown. It will improve pedestrian and bicycle amenities to allow for the shared use of Dwight Street by multiple modes of transportation, connect the residents of The Flats to the downtown more safely and to further encourage the reduction of short vehicle trips within the Center City.
